Brecker, Michael - Tales From The Hudson

Michael Brecker, a major influence on today's young saxophonists, shows off his own influences a bit throughout this fine modern straight-ahead set. Brecker sounds surprisingly like Stanley Turrentine on parts of "Midnight Voyage," and otherwise displays his roots in Ernie Watts and John Coltrane. With the exception of Don Grolnick's "Willie T.," the music on the CD is comprised of group originals (five by the leader) and falls into the 1990s mainstream of jazz. While the tenor saxophonist has p... more

Brecker, Michael - Time Is Of The Essence

Michael Brecker introduces a couple of new wrinkles to his sound on his sixth album, in the form of two new sidemen. Larry Goldings's organ makes for an unusual quartet that also includes Brecker on tenor sax, frequent guest Pat Metheny on guitar, and one of three different drummers, in that there is no bass. As a result, Metheny often fills in that role when he isn' t soloing. Goldings's touch is light, in contrast to the more intense playing of Brecker and Metheny. But it is the second new sid... more

Brecker, Michael - Nearness Of You - The Ballad Book

The seven-time Grammy award-winning tenor saxophonist, Michael Brecker brings an all-star band together on this first ever ballad project titled Nearness of You: The Ballad Book. Accompanied by Herbie Hancock on piano, Pat Metheny on guitars, Charlie Haden on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and a special guest appearance by James Taylor, singing his sensational hit "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You," the tenor saxophonist creates rich resonant statement... more

Brecker, Michael - Now You See It, Now You Don't

For Now You See It, Michael Brecker's third recording as a leader, the tenor great uses different personnel on most of the selections but plays consistently well. Jim Beard's synthesizers are utilized for atmosphere to set up a funky groove or to provide a backdrop for the leader. Some of the music sounds like updated John Coltrane (Joey Calderazzo's McCoy Tyner-influenced piano helps) while other pieces could almost pass for Weather Report, if Wayne Shorter rather than Joe Zawinul had been the ... more

Saxophone Summit (Brecker, M . / Lovano, Joe / Liebman, Dave) - Gathering Of Spirits

Michael Brecker, Dave Liebman and Joe Lovano, three of the most prolific and innovative saxophonists in jazz, have played together periodically since 1996 as an experimental trio known as Saxophone Summit. Telarc has captured this threesome’s adventurous energy on their debut recording, Gathering of Spirits.
Brecker, Liebman and Lovano are joined by a world-class rhythm section—pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Billy Hart—for a set of six tracks that recall the dynamic... more

Brecker, Michael / Ogerman, Claus - Cityscape

In the early '60s, arranger Claus Ogerman's signature style fueled classic hits like Frank Sinatra's landmark duet with Antonio Carlos Jobim - it's an approach that is still emulated today. By the early '70s, when a glut of jazz recordings laden with strings and background vocals surfaced (most in an effort to capitalize on the string-section appeal of some disco hits), Ogerman stood apart for his elegant melding of jazz and strings. Evidence of this is his work on George Benson's crossover hit ... more

Brecker Brothers - Return Of The Brecker Brothers

Evans, Gil - Live in Lugano 1983

Cool Jazz:

Haden, Charlie / Brecker, Michael - American Dreams

This overly long quartet-plus-strings session is Charlie Haden's paean to an ideal America, made during a time that was ripe for such reflections.
The band, with Haden on bass, Michael Brecker on tenor, Brad Mehldau on piano, and Brian Blade on drums, is unassailably strong. But listeners could have lived without the ear-candy sheen provided by the 34-piece orchestra, arranged primarily by Alan Broadbent, with additional contributions from Jeremy Lubbock and Vince Mendoza. Hancock, Herbie / Brecker, Michael - Directions In Music: Live At Massey Hall

A double-milestone year for jazz, 2001 marked the 75th anniversary of the births of both Miles Davis and John Coltrane. With that in mind, Herbie Hancock went on tour with a quintet modeled after his V.S.O.P. bands of the '70s and '80s and the Tribute to Miles band of the '90s, which in turn were modeled after the 1965-1968 Miles Davis Quintet.
The question this disc proposes: Can you go home yet again? Hancock preferred to dodge that one, saying that he was attempting to push the music onw... more

Steps Ahead - Steps Ahead

The debut domestic recording by Steps Ahead (following three sets only released in Japan) features the 1982 version of the group: vibraphonist Mike Mainieri, tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker, pianist Eliane Elias (a young unknown at the time), bassist Eddie Gomez, and drummer Peter Erskine. The music is essentially high-quality funky fusion, with Brecker typically blowing up a storm, Mainieri often playing the synthivibe, and Elias showing some early individuality. Best known among the seven or... more
