Der kanadische Jazz-Pianist und Komponist Oscar Emmanuel Peterson (geb. 15. 8. 1925 in Montreal, Kanada, gest. 23. 12. 2007 in Mississauga (Toronto, Kanada) verstarb 82-jährig an Nierenversagen.

Seine herausragende Virtuosität und Anschlagstechnik machten den Sohn karibischer Einwanderer zu einem der besten Pianisten der Jazzgeschichte. Seine phänomenale Technik stand auf dem gleichen Niveau wie die seines Idols Art Tatums.

Die ersten Schallplatteneinspielungen mit eigenem Trio spielte Oscar Peterson am 30. April 1945 für RCA Victor in Montreal ein.
Im September 1949 schaffte er mit einem Auftritt in der Carnegie Hall anlässlich der Konzertreihe Jazz at the Philharmonic den internationalen Durchbruch.
In den darauffolgenden Jahren folgten noch viele Auftritte bei dieser von Norman Granz gegründeten Konzertreihe.
Dabei kam es zu mittlerweile gut dokumentierter Zusammenarbeit mit Jazzgrößen wie Louis Armstrong, Louie Bellson, Ray Brown, Roy Eldridge, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Billie Holiday, Barney Kessel, Buddy Rich, Lester Young, Ben Webster und vielen anderen.

Den Großteil seines Werkes nahm Oscar Peterson für die Schallplattenfirmen Clef, Verve und Pablo auf. Das deutsche Label MPS veröffentlichte in den späten 1960er Jahre einige hochinteressante Schallplatteneinspielungen von Oscar Peterson.

Seit 1988 spielte Peterson mit Musikern wie Ray Brown, Bobby Durham, Herb Ellis, Milt Jackson und anderen eine Reihe ausgezeichneter Alben für das amerikanische Label Telarc ein.

Neben vielen Ehrendoktor-Würden verschiedener Universitäten erhielt der Ausnahmepianist Peterson mehrmals den Grammy Award sowie mehrere Ernennungen in die Hall of Fame. Im November 2000 wurde er mit dem IMC-UNESCO Music Award geehrt.
