With the general topic "CurrentTendencies in Jazz", the different developments of jazz from about 1980 up to the present time are to be analyzed in the course of this Congress. Within this period no nominal coined jazz styles occurred, one speaks rather about stylistic tendencies. They are looked at closely from the viewpoint of the musicologist, the jazz historian, the music journalist, the jazz educationalist and the practical musician. The lecturers' contributions, which come from Great Britain, Germany and Austria, will be published in Volume40 (2008) of our yearbook "Jazzforschung / Jazz Research".

On Saturday 21 Apri12007, from 8.30 p. m. onward, jazz concerts with ensembles closely connected with the lnstitute of Jazz at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts Graz will take place. In cooperation of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF Wien) with the West-German Radio (WDR Köln), these concerts as well as reports and interviews on the Congress will be broadcast in the course of a "Long Jazz Night" on April 21/22, 2007.

All Congress Participants are heartily invited to play an active role within this symposium, and I hope you will have a nice stay in Graz.
