Lee Konitz (geb. 13. Oktober 1927)

Der amerikanische Jazz-Altsaxophonist Lee Konitz (geb. 13. 10. 1927 in Chicago, Illinois, USA) feiert heute seinen 80. Geburtstag.

Konitz, Lee - Subconscious-Lee

A debut for both Lee Konitz and the Prestige label, Subconscious-Lee brings together many of the students who came through Lennie Tristano's idiosyncratic "school" of jazz during the immediate postwar years. Forging a heady approach to Charlie Parker's innovations, full of lithe and at times super fast solo lines, Tristano and his favorite pupil Konitz in particular nurtured an introverted, wan, yet still swinging alternative to the frenetic muscle of bebop. Other students like tenor saxophonist... more

Getz, Stan / Haig, Al - Conception

A unique all-star set recorded in various combinations between 1949 and 1951, Conception is an underappreciated masterpiece of cerebral cool jazz. Although Miles Davis gets top billing, he appears on only half the album and then most often as a sideman with only occasional solos. Saxophonists Lee Konitz, Stan Getz, and Gerry Mulligan are the true stars of the album, with Konitz particularly shining. So if this disc establishes a new incident of history, influenced by lines of inspiration drifting together from the past, it also effects our perspective of that past as an agent of discovery in the present. What they have discovered on this particular occasion is an area of engagement free as the breeze—or perhaps three breezes that momentarily meet, tangle, blend, and dissolve, warm and invisible, in their own sweet way. The guest is the primary soloist, though each member of the big band is featured at some point.

Konitz, Lee / Kegel, Marco / Hagen, Axel / Gustav Klimt String Quartet - Jonquil

"Lee Konitz -the constant musical searcher - is certainly in the upper echelons of the true jazz artist." – (Irv Rochlin in his biographical notes) "Aside from the Konitz solos which warm every selection, there is consistently good work by both Hagen and saxophonist Marco Kegel. This is largely gentle, reflective (yes, even romantic!) music, beautifully performed, but still exibiting a high jazz content. This set is a jewel which should not be overlooked."
