There was a whiff of legend that followed Leon "Bix" Beiderbecke: around the short life of the cornet player (1903-1931), a myth arose that made him an "artist of the damned", rooted in the thriller that was jazz. This young man lived only for music; his existence was that of one of the first white soloists to express a personal style, and his intimate, finely-honed expressiveness, full of nuance and half-tones, would influence several generations of musicians, from Lester Young to Boris Vian.
