Pettiford, Oscar - Classics 1951 - 1954

This CD collates the first sessions under Pettiford's name. In July 1944, he made two solo tracks with pianist Clyde Hart for the tiny Delta label. No copy of this record has ever been seen although there are rumors that it exists! Pettiford's chaotic but truly unforgettable big band session from Jan. 1945, as well as his first records for Mercer have already been issued on this label. Thus, two further tracks for Mercer open this CD followed by a fantastic session for Roost. On these four tracks Oscar Pettiford's cello is particularly well recorded - warm, crispy and clear - better than on the equally fine items with Harry Babasin. In late 1953, he recorded for the Charles Mingus Debut label, including two fine arrangements by Quincy Jones: "Stockholm Sweetnin" and "Tamalpais."
