Two previously unissued performances: a 1959 concert in Italy, featuring a young Chet performing and singing "My Funny Valentine", and also the 1988 Stuttgart concert includes Chet soloing on piano! Excellent sound and image quality. Nearly 30 years separate the two concerts presented on this remarkable DVD. By 1959, Chet -who began recording in 1952- had been a star for less than a decade.Chet's playing and singing are enjoyable throughout this interesting and previously unissued document from his early career. Famous Swedish sax player Lars Gullin is also present in the group and contributes interesting solos and accompaniment to Chet's playing and singing. The second half of the DVD finds Chet again in Europe in 1988, where he would spend most of his time during his final years. This Stuttgart concert is much better known than its aforementioned predecessor, but has been unavailable for a long time. Chet delivers a very intimate and intense performance, which ends with an outstanding event: pianist Nicola Stilo takes an acoustic guitar, Chet switches from the trumpet to the piano, and both play a beautiful and moving version of Jobim's "Portrait in Black and White", with Chet soloing on the keyboard. Certainly an indispensable DVD for all Baker fans and jazz lovers.
