Watters, Lu / And His Yerba Buena Jazz Band - Good Time Music: San Francisco Style

Californian trumpeter Lu Watters (1911-1990) blew the lustiest and earliest notes of the 40s white “Trad Jazz” revival. He was an enormously influential bandleader; the stamp of historical authenticity set his famous Yerba Buena Jazz Band apart and stimulated the large-scale revival of interest in New Orleans jazz, leading to a phenomenally successful career as America's first real revivalist band. The band’s raucously jovial and earthy style became known as “good time music”. Living Era’s Good Time Music, San Francisco Style presents the 25 best from the Yerba Buena’s great series of 40s recordings. Many are jazz standards that are still the bread-and-butter of all the 100s of Trad bands still playing: Muskrat Ramble, Maple Leaf Rag, High Society, Milenberg Joys, Tiger Rag and so on. There are three fine Lu Watters originals: Big Bear Stomp, Antigua Blues and Emperor Norton’s Hunch, and the sequence ends with a couple of breezy vocals from banjoist Clancy Hayes. All the familiar Yerba Buena stalwarts are here, including Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey, Wally Rose, Ellis Horne and Bob Helm. Lu Watters (trumpet), Clancy Hayes (banjo), Harry Mordecai (banjo), Pat Patten (banjo), Dick Lammi (bass, tuba), Bob Helm (clarinet), Ellis Horne (clarinet), Wally Rose (piano), Turk Murphy (trombone), Bob Scobey (trumpet), Don Noakes (trumpet), Squire Girsback (tuba), Bill Dart (drums). 25 Original Mono Recordings 1941-1950
