RST BSIN01055093 Weinrich, Zipflo / Quartet - Zipflo Weinrich Quartet feat. Karl Ratzer Gypsy music, for some people, means the Hungarian csardas; for others, it's the Spranish flamenco. In the mid-'30s, the Belgian guitarist Django Reinhardt, born in 1910, was attracting attention. He became a legend in his own lifetime and his charisma reaches up to the present.
Especially the members of Django’s race, the Sinti, have made the language of his music their own. What the play, they play in a jazz idiom; with a dash of gypsy blood and a dash of European musictradition. The unmistakable musical heritage of the Viennese Sinto-violinist Zipflo Weinrich is apparent in all of the pieces on this record. His brillant technique combined with his melodies, sometimes sad, sometimes jubilant, sometimes thoughtful, prove that he is a worthy descendant of the great Django Reinhardt. A look at the composers of the recorded numbers show Zipflo Weinrich as a remarkably creative musician; it is not an exaggeration if one comments that Zipflo's compositions are, in part, melodically more interesting ('Miri Menschengi') than one or the other of the standards.
Moreover, Zipflo Weinrich, who grew up in the age of modem jazz, makes it clear on this recording that gypsy-jazz can be more than just an utter imitation of Django' s music. Zipflo's jazz is the 'gypsy music' of our times.
