Reviews:
While this might not be the wisest choice if you're aiming to assemble a comprehensive Gillum collection via several discs, or just to target one definitive best-of anthology, it's a pretty good 22-song survey of his output from the late '30s to the late '40s. This is underrated, formative early Chicago band blues, paced by Gillum's likable vocal persona, fine harmonica work, and sturdy arrangements. Indeed "You're Laughing Now," from 1938, finds almost all of the elements of classic Chicago electric blues in place except electricity and a full drum set (though Washboard Sam keeps time on his washboard). Big Bill Broonzy plays guitars on about half of the tracks (all dating from the late '30s and early '40s), and Big Maceo Merriweather, Eddie Boyd, and Washboard Sam are also heard on occasion. Though much of the material verges more toward the good-timey and the jazzy than "You're Laughing Now" does, it's never hokey. Gillum gets uncommonly serious on "Wartime Blues," cut just days before the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and puts an admirable stamp on the standard "I'm Gonna Leave You on the Outskirts of Town." The late-'40s tracks, not often paid attention to by historians, show him remaining on a high level, his sound not much changed save for the addition of full drums and some electric guitar.
