Sunshine, Lightfoot, Elsdon, Wallis, Charlesworth, Mulligan, Melly - At The Jazz Band Ball

When the musical phenomenon knows as the “Trad Boom” exploded on the UK scene in the late 50s, no-one was more surprised than many of the dedicated British jazzmen who’d never originally thought they might actually make a living from the music they loved. They soon found themselves travelling the length and breadth of Britain in bandwagons to supply the demands of fans who had not yet been indoctrinated by the propaganda of rock. It’s hard to believe now, but BBC Radio treated this home-grown version of jazz a form of music to be given equal prominence to pop music in their programming as well as allocating it airtime in specialised shows. At The Jazz Band Ball was an example of the latter – aimed at overseas listeners, broadcast from Bush House in London and recorded onto transcription discs for world-wide syndication. This is the first time they have been heard since the 60s. This set features six bands that were the backbone of the traditional jazz circuit in those days. Monty Sunshine's Jazz Band, Terry Lightfoot's Jazzmen, Alan Elsdon and his Jazzband, ,Bob Wallis and this Storyville Jazzmen, Dick Charlesworth and his City Gents, , Mick Mulligan and his band featuring George Melly. 24 Tracks. Recorded in October and November 1962.
