George Antheil – jazzig
George Antheil was a crazy fellow who very much fancied himself in the role of the »bad boy«, as he termed himself in the title of his autobiography. On the other hand, he aimed at doing more than just scandalizing and shocking the music world; his ambition as an artist and especially as a composer was great and to be taken seriously: »By one stroke I wish to conquer the world. I feel within me a greatness which no one yet has dreamed of. I will blast a new way.« He sought this new way his whole life long, from the scandalous Ballet mécanique to his late symphonies. With alert eyes and ears he took in everything that was going on around him: the hecticness and stress of modern times, jazz, and twentieth-century composers as different as Stravinsky and Sibelius — he amalgamated it all. Markus Becker and Eiji Oue render the jazzy Antheil with pizazz.
